Where would we be today without proper Marketing campaigns to show our products and services we are trying to promote?

I'll try to answer that question after you read this short story on a specific Marketing campaign I found at Marketing seminar.

This well respected Marketing agency had undertaken to Market a new brand product which was expected to overtake the existing Market and leave them in the dust so to speak.
The manufacturer of this product gave the Marketing agency ..carte blanche in promoting this product and money was no object.

The advertising agency had started a great campaign with their graphics department, advertising media which included radio, newspapers, magazines, TV commercials, and billboards.
They covered all the bases including the vast sales representatives. They left nothing to chance.

As the launching date was fast approaching the CEO of the Marketing agency checked to make everything was in place. The advertising campaign was launched and the manufacturers sales reps called on all the distributors, stores outlets, specialty stores. The disappointing results started rolling in.

A couple of weeks passed by and the results stayed the same. Something was definitely not working and had to rectified.
The CEO had called an emergency meeting with the Marketing agency and all the sales reps.

The Manufacturers CEO demanded to know - where the problem was and how to fix it.
The agency had done an excellent job in their marketing campaign so it was not their fault. The sales reps did all things possible that was asked of them.

"Has anyone got any information that could correct this problem", asked the frustrated CEO.

There was a hushed silence in the entire room.

A voice from the back of the room cried out "THE DOGS DON'T LIKE IT."

When Marketing and recruiting ....
You must ask yourself, " is your marketing campaign directing your products and services to the wrong prospects.?"
Wouldn't it make sense to do a test Marketing before we load both barrels of our Marketing campaign.

Using a "shotgun approach" will result in a very poor and dismal failure. Are we still trying to recruit anyone and everyone that can "fog a mirror."
This may be the biggest reason that there is such a great number of failures in the Network Marketing Campaigns

Why not go after the REAL prospects that have already shown their interests as entrepreneurs and all they need is some guidance to succeed. There are literally thousands coming on board everyday looking for a way to make more money or leave their day jobs

Of all the Marketing stories I have read and heard this one is really a classic of a Marketing Venture and has been an inspiration to me for years. You must take into consideration that at that time the main mode of communication was the telephone with high cost long distance.
We have come a long way since those days with the Computers, Internet, cell phones, Audio-Video Conferencing and instant information from Google, Yahoo, etc. To me this story is about a man named Joe who was sort of a pioneer for the Work From Home Entrepreneurs.

Joe had to be a truly dedicated man attempted generating leads and Marketing products without the slightest of experience except not lose the determination to reach the goal he envisioned for himself, his wife and young daughter. Right after returning from the Second World War he found a job that paid him thirty-five dollars a week. That was hardly enough to support his young family. He wanted more than that.

Joe spent time searching newspaper and magazine ads for products that were in a very short supply overseas. He bought an old typewriter and used his kitchen table to send out letters to his former Army buddy contacts and Companies that were in need of supplies which might readily be available in the United States. Everyday, after work, Joe would be pounding away on his typewriter and spending money on postage mailing out his letters offering to find and supply any products overseas that were in short supply in their Country. He kept on writing and sending letters, month after month. One day a small classified ad caught his eye. The ad was for a commoditySoap. Joe contacted the advertiser in New York and received some samples which he put in envelopes and mailed out to his contacts overseas.

He kept on sending out letters and at times skipped lunches to save money for postage and stationary. After about a year, Joe received a letter from a South African agency and in it was a Letter of Credit drawn on a South African Bank and payable to an large American Bank for a total of ONE-HUNDRED-EIGHTY THOUSAND DOLLARS !
The money was for the purchase of THIRTY-THOUSAND Cases of Soap to be loaded on a ship within sixty days, otherwise the Letter of Credit will expired worthless.

Joe was very excited and tried to find someone to go to New York to complete this deal and offered fifty percent of the profits. Joe asked everyone he knew to take on the great deal, but there were no takers. As a last resolve, Joe asked for a "leave of absence" as he did not want to lose his job - just in case. Reluctantly, his boss gave in.

Joe withdrew his savings which was under three-hundred dollars, armed with the Letter of Credit left his home and family in Pittsburg and headed for New York. Upon his arrival in New York he immediately contacted the advertiser of the soap. To his horror he discovered that the soap samples he received was from one of those Five Percenters, an agent trying to make some money by finding customers and then finding the soap. He did not own a bar of soap! Joe set out to find a supplier of soap or he was doomed. ( Where was Google when you needed them?)

Joe spent a day in the library looking up manufacturers of soap and making a list of phone numbers. The next day was spent in making those phone calls from his hotel room and to top it off ..there was a phone operators strike. Management staff had to do the operators work and it was a very slow process. Joe kept repeating his inquiries and a couple of managers were sympathetic hearing the messages worked extra hard to help Joe in his search. Finally, the next afternoon, Joe found a Soap manufacturer in Alabama! He spoke with the management and told him that he would fly out to arrange the sale. The manager told Joe that this was only a plant and he would have to go to the head office to make the purchase.

The head office turned out to be only a few blocks from Joe’s hotel room. Joe had rushed over to the Head Office and worked his way past the secretary to see the CEO. The arrangements were completed for the soap, but being inexperienced and excited Joe made a mistake. The purchase was made F.O.B. Alabama! Now, Joe was pounding the streets looking for a trucking Company to go and transport the soap order to the wharf in New York, without putting up a deposit. After numerous rejections, he found a small trucking Company that agreed to the task. Joe got in with one of the drivers and led the caravan of thirty trucks to Alabama. Joe was flat broke. He was bumming sandwiches, meals, and coffee from the drivers during the trip. They immediately loaded up the cargo and headed back to New York wharf.

They had arrived with the cargo in New York a day before the expiration of the letter of Credit. They worked feverishly all night long loading the lighters (small boat that takes to cargo to the ship). The next afternoon, at two o’clock, Joe did not have the bill of lading and the bank was closing in one hour. The letter of Credit will expire at the same time. Joe, was frantic!
Luckily, the Steamship office was near the wharf. Joe, barged his way into the CEO’s office. He was filthy, no bath, didn't shave for days and looking ragged and looked like he could have used half a case of soap himself. He relayed the story of his ordeal and the CEO could see the determination Joe had put in and assured Joe that it would not be lost. The CEO pushed some buttons, bells started ringing and people appeared from everywhere and started carrying out the orders. Soon Joe had the paperwork in his hand.

The CEO’s limousine rushed Joe to the bank where Joe cashed the Letter of Credit just in time. Outside the bank, Joe realized he was still penniless, no cab fare to his hotel room. He got back into the Bank to get some cash for himself just before they locked the door. Once back in the hotel room he had run up a bill of over eight hundred dollars in phone charges! He called his wife.

She was distraught and crying. She wrote a ten-dollar check at a grocery store and it bounced.

Upon his arrival back home, Joe calculated all his costs of this Marketing Venture and it turned in a net profit of THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS!

Everyone Joe told his story to could only respond with -

WHAT A LUCKY GUY!

That was a start for Joe.

He specialized in Mail-Order Marketing making over One Million Dollars.

He sold over Twenty-Five-Million Dollars of products and when you consider that most products were only a few dollars or less, it is a tremendous feat in at self.

His name - Joe Cossman
